Receiver Channel

In a metal building, the receiver channel is the secondary member that catches the ends of your purlins or girts and locks them into the framing. It's a small detail with an outsized effect on how cleanly the rest of the structure goes up. The channel needs to sit roughly 1/8" taller than the member it houses, so the purlin can slide in square and bolt off without a fight. Get the fit wrong, and you're shimming, grinding, or worse. Get it right, and the rest of the wall or roof framing falls into place.

Where Receiver Channel Goes to Work

Receiver channel shows up wherever purlins or girts need to terminate cleanly into the building's framing. The most common applications include:

  • End walls and side walls. This is the bread-and-butter use. The channel runs along the perimeter of the structure and captures the ends of C or Z purlins as they tie into the primary frame. It also gives wall sheeting a clean, consistent edge to fasten to.
  • Carports and covered storage. Open-face channel is a staple of carport construction, where it serves as both the perimeter member and the connection point for the cee purlins running across the roof. Triple-S supports this segment directly with matched carport rake trim sized for 4", 6", and 8" purlins.
  • Agricultural and utility buildings. Pole barns, equipment sheds, and machine storage rely on receiver channel for the same reason heavier commercial builds do: fast bolted connections, predictable fit-up, and a finish that holds up to dust, livestock, and the weather coming through the open ends.
  • Retrofits and additions. When you're tying new framing into an existing structure, receiver channel gives you a forgiving connection point for purlins that may not land exactly where the new design wants them. The 1/8" tolerance absorbs small variations that would otherwise mean field modifications.

Stocked sizes solve most jobs. The ones they don't are where we earn our keep. If your design calls for a deeper section, a tighter flange, a non-standard gauge, or a length that doesn't pull from a 25-ft stick without waste, we'll fabricate the receiving channel to match the print. 

That includes builds where the purlin spec is slightly off-nominal, retrofits that have to mate with existing framing, and jobs where matched receivers and base angles need to ship together.

Open Face Channel, Receiver Channel: Same Part, Different Names

You'll see receiver channel called "open face channel" on some prints and "purlin receiver" on others. The product is the same: a 14-ga. open-face section sized to capture the end of a purlin or girt. Whichever term your engineer uses, we can match it.

Receiver Channel FAQs

Is receiver channel structurally weaker than a C-purlin of the same size?

It's a fair question, and one builders ask often, because the open-face profile looks lighter than a C-purlin without the return lips. Receiver channel is a connection and termination member, not a primary load-carrying element. It ties the ends of purlins or girts into the frame and gives wall sheeting something to fasten to. For typical end-wall and side-wall conditions in light commercial, agricultural, and carport-style builds, 14-gauge channel is sized appropriately for that role. For longer cantilevers, heavy snow loads, or any situation where the channel would carry purlin loads as a primary structural member, you'll want an engineer to size it, and you may need a heavier section than a standard receiver.

Do purlins bolt or weld into receiver channel?

Bolted is the standard method, and it's the connection the 1/8" oversize tolerance is designed for. The purlin slides in perpendicular and gets bolted through the web and flanges of the channel. Welding is used in some applications, but bolting is faster on the jobsite, doesn't require certified welders, and avoids burning the primer or galvanizing off the steel.

Can receiver channel be lapped at splices like Z-purlins?

No, the open-face profile doesn't nest the way a Z-purlin does, so receivers are butted at splices rather than lapped. If you need continuity across a splice, plan on a backing plate, a properly designed bolted connection, or coordinating the splice over a primary frame member.

What's the difference between red primed and galvanized, and which should I order?

Red primed (red oxide) is a shop primer applied over bare steel. It protects the channel during transport and storage and gives a topcoat something to bite into, but it's not a finished coating on its own. Exterior or exposed applications should be topcoated. Galvanized is zinc-coated for corrosion resistance and is the better choice for humid climates, coastal exposure, agricultural buildings with chemical exposure, or any application where the channel won't be painted. Galvanized is available from Triple-S by special order.

Do you cut receiver channel to length?

Yes. Stock material runs 25 ft., but Triple-S offers cut-to-length and sawing services through our processing capabilities, so we can ship pieces sized to your bill of materials rather than full sticks. That's worth doing when freight space is tight, when your crew doesn't have a chop saw on site, or when you're trying to limit field cuts on a galvanized finish.
