- Standard channels: Top and bottom flanges connected by a perpendicular web
- Bar channel: Smaller than standard C-channel
- MC channel: Miscellaneous shapes and sizes with thicker flanges
- Stair stringer channel: Specialty channel for staircase construction
The hot-rolling process ensures uniformity in shape and dimensions, offering the reliability necessary for construction applications.
Structural Steel Channel Materials and Properties
C-channel is usually manufactured from structural steel and hot-rolled to preserve strength and toughness. Triple-S Steel ® stocks a broad selection of hot rolled carbon channels, covering a multigrade range that includes ASTM A36, A529-50, A572-50, A709-36, and A709-50 grades. Common materials include:
A36: Low-carbon structural steel easily processed and machined
- Composition of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, silicon, sulfur
- 58 to 80 ksi tensile strength
- 36 ksi minimum yield strength
A572-50: HSLA steel popular for welding or bolting
- Composition similar to A36 with added vanadium, niobium
- 65 to 85 ksi tensile strength
- 50 ksi minimum yield strength
Structural steel channel is strong yet flexible, allowing them to bear and distribute heavy loads effectively without breaking. Plus, the shape allows for easy installation and connection, especially through standard welding techniques. C-channel is also easy to modify and cut to meet job-specific custom requirements.
